Oera Fynyddoedd

The Fferedig Ddynion come from the extreme western edge of the Four Part Land, to the south of the nation of Tri-Hauwcerton, a land of high plateaus and higher mountains. The terrain is almost completely perma-frost, although in the summer it thaws enough that scrub grass and other aspects of the tundra are able to grow. The land is split by mountain chains, cutting up between the plateaus and making traversing from one to the next almost impossible, except by traveling down to the ground level and then back up to the next plateau along.

There is a strip of barren ground that runs for miles and miles in front of the mountains, and this wasteland forms a barrier across which almost no men nor beasts cross. It is passable, yes, but the effort and the energy involved mean that none do it without the best of causes. Only recently have larger numbers of men begun crossing it, almost all passing from Oera Fynyddoedd into the fertile lands beyond.

Plants and animals upon the highlands are rare, but enough of them survive that the Fferedig Ddynion can live their nomadic life upon the high earth. Creatures of shaggy coat who drink water from the snow are prevalent, and those capable burrow down into the earth, living in that thin layer above the permafrost and below the snow. Trapping these is often the best source of food, for there are many more than a first glance would suggest. The hide and bone of animals forms the walls and structure of their tents, collapsed and stored upon the back of pack animals as the Fferedig Ddynion shift from place to place, careful never to overharvest from a single location.

In terms of the populace itself, they have no predilection towards talented individuals of any element, although they trend away from fire. There are none born who have that affiliation, and they are not overly gifted with those of any other element, one of the many reasons that they have slipped from the minds of the world. Clothing and material is made from the hide and bone, and there is no notion of an overall government, just groups of elders who control each of the various clans and tribes. Likewise, no standing army or other military force exists, for conflict is rare, and usually only over a plentiful feeding ground, one that can feed a tribe for the winter.

Events are underway, behind the leadership of Annwyd Arwedda, that will change many of these things.
